The United States mission has hailed the creative industry collaboration between America and Nigeria.

Speaking at a pre-award reception in honour of the 16th Headies, Will Stevens, the US consul general, praised the burgeoning ties of both countries in music, film, fashion, arts, tech, and professional and educational exchanges.

Stevens said the return of the Headies to Atlanta “symbolises the Nigerian music industry’s dynamism, creativity and growing global reach”.

He also hailed the success and dominance of Afrobeats in the US, adding that the mission is proud to be partnering with the Headies and Lagos government.

“Afrobeats is dominating the American music scene right now and we are so proud to be partnering with the Headies and the Lagos State Government to work together to continue to build on our longstanding bilateral ties through music,” he said.

“We remain committed to supporting programmes and initiatives that promote artistic expression, encourage cultural exchange, and strengthen the capacity of Nigerian artists and professionals in the creative industry.”

Amina Smaila, Nigerian consul general in Atlanta, said the upcoming award event in Atlanta shows that “Nigerian music is shaping the global cultural landscape”.

“Nigerian music has truly become a global force. This demonstrates the impact of Nigerian music beyond borders and its role in shaping the global cultural landscape,” Smaila said.

On his part, Ayo Animashaun, the founder of the Headies, expressed excitement at the growing cultural and artistic exchanges between the two countries.

“Our goal is to continue to support the development of talent and nurture innovation in the music industry,” Animashaun said.

This year’s Headies will hold on September 3, 2023, in Atlanta for the second consecutive year.
