Driven by a passion for cutting-edge technology and artificial intelligence (AI), Joseph Ogaba Oche pursued a Ph.D. in Information Technology (AI) from the Central University of Nicaragua, Nicaragua, a central American nation. Oche, Ph.D., MBCS, who hails from Benue, stands at the forefront of technological innovation, with a distinguished career spanning over 13 years in the dynamic landscape of the IT sector. The Abuja-based AI expert’s mission is to drive the adoption and advancement of AI and cybersecurity solutions in Africa and beyond.

In this interview, Oche, who is the co-founder of tech company ‘WeGoHost Global’, shares his journey using AI technology with TheCable Lifestyle’s PELUMI BOLAWA. He also talks about how AI is shaping the current global workspace and the need for professionals to key into its benefits.

TheCable Lifestyle: What inspired you to pursue a career in AI, and how have you seen the field evolve?

My inspiration to delve into AI was driven by a combination of a strong software development background and a fascination with pushing technological boundaries. Over the years, I have witnessed the field evolve from rule-based systems to more sophisticated machine learning and deep learning techniques. The increasing availability of data, advancements in computing power, and algorithmic improvements have been pivotal in shaping the landscape of AI.

TheCable Lifestyle: What would you say have been some of your greatest achievements in your career journey?

One of my biggest achievements, without a doubt, lies in my pivotal role as the co-founder and chief technology officer (CTO) of WeGoHost Global. Under my leadership and technical expertise, the company has achieved remarkable milestones, including amassing huge subscribers within the first three months of operation, maintaining a great annual revenue, and securing funding. My ability to drive technological innovation, lead customer onboarding efforts, and foster business growth showcase a rare combination of vision, execution, and leadership. This achievement not only highlights my entrepreneurial spirit but also my significant impact on shaping the success and trajectory of WeGoHost Global in the competitive web hosting market.

For me, I would say the challenging moments in my career journey often involve navigating complex ethical considerations, ensuring responsible use of AI technology, and addressing misconceptions about AI’s capabilities and limitations. It’s an ongoing effort to foster understanding and promote the beneficial applications of AI while mitigating potential risks.

In the next decade, AI is poised to impact various aspects of society significantly. It will likely lead to increased efficiency in industries, improvements in healthcare and education, and the creation of new job opportunities. However, challenges such as job displacement, ethical concerns, and bias in algorithms need careful consideration.

Practical applications include virtual assistants (like Siri), recommendation systems (Netflix), autonomous vehicles, medical diagnosis systems, and fraud detection in finance. These applications showcase the versatility and real-world impact of AI.

Effective collaboration involves designing AI systems that are transparent, interpretable, and aligned with human values. Human oversight, feedback loops, and ethical considerations are crucial.

I think some of the challenges include ethical concerns, potential job displacement, and biases in AI algorithms. On the flip side, AI offers benefits such as increased efficiency, improved decision-making, advancements in fields like medicine, and overall progress in technology.

In the Nigerian context, AI is likely influencing the workspace by enhancing productivity, improving services, and creating new job opportunities. It could lead to more efficient business processes and contribute to the growth of industries.

TheCable Lifestyle: Do you think AI has been a blessing for up-and-coming singers who embrace its use? 

AI has already begun to influence music production by offering tools for generating melodies, harmonies, and even entire compositions. While AI can assist in generating ideas and providing inspiration, it is ultimately up to human musicians to curate, refine, and add their unique touch to the creative process.

Policymakers should play a crucial role in balancing the promotion of AI innovation with addressing ethical concerns. Regulations should ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI deployment.
