The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has raised the fee for its returning students by over 300%.
The federal university announced the new rates for its fresh and returning students in a statement on Wednesday.
The statement said the adjustments were approved after an emergency meeting of the university senate held on Tuesday.
In the new rates, OAU said returning students are now expected to pay N89,200 as against the previous N20,100.
This amounts to a hike of about 343.8%.
The new fee structure
- Faculties of Arts, Law, and Humanities:
Freshers: N151,200
Returning students: N89,200 - Faculties of Technology and Science:
Freshers: N163,200
Returning students: N101,200 - Faculties in the College of Health Sciences and Faculty of Pharmacy:
Freshers: N190,200
Returning students: N128,200
Former sessional fees for returning students (2021/2022)
- Law/arts/Social Sciences/Admin/Edu Arts – N20,100
- Science/EDM/Education Science/Tech/Agric – N28,100
- Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Dentistry/Pharmacy – N31,100
- Faculty of Administration, (diploma in local government studies) – N55,300
Former fees for fresh students (2021/2022 session)
- Law/Arts/Social Sciences/Admin/Education Arts – N68,700
- Science/EDM/Education Science/Technology/Agric – N79,700
- Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Dentistry/Pharmacy – N82,700
- Faculty of Administration, (Diploma in Local Government Studies) – N88,300
Other fees – N24,090
- Development levy (once throughout studentship) – N18,000.00
- Tertiary Institution Students Health Insurance Program levy – N2,000.00
- Student welfare insurance scheme – N1,000.00
- Accommodation – N3,090.
With the upward review of its fees, OAU joins a growing list of federal universities that have raised their charges since the dawn of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The hikes have since prompted a nationwide outcry and protests among students across various campuses.
Among others who have raised their fees are the University of Lagos (UNILAG), the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in Borno, the University of Jos (UNIJOS), and the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo.
Others are Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi and the Usmanu Danfodiyo University (UDUS).
