Rema, the Nigerian singer, has won the ‘Best Afrobeats’ category at the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs).
The Afrobeats category was added to the nomination list for the first time in the EMAs’ history.
In October, the event, which was scheduled to hold in Paris, on November 5, was, however, canceled by the organisers due to security concerns “given the volatility of world events”.
Despite the cancellation, they assured that the winning artistes would still receive their MTV EMA Awards.
Rema and Selena Gomez, the US songstress, were also among the headliners for the EMAs.
The ‘Calm Down’ crooner was nominated in the ‘Best Collaboration’ and ‘Best Afrobeats’ categories.
‘TQG’, a song by Karol G and Shakira, however, beat Rema to claim the ‘Best Collaboration’ category.
Taylor Swift was the biggest winner, clinching three awards — which include ‘Best Artist,’ ‘Best Live,’ and ‘Best Video’.
Nicki Minaj also bagged two awards; ‘Best Hip Hop’ and ‘Best US Act’.
