Matthew Perry, the American actor best known for playing Chandler Bing in ‘Friends’, the hit 1990s sitcom, has died at the age of 54.
TMZ reports that Perry was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday.
In a statement, the Los Angeles police department said first responders rushed to the address after a call reporting a cardiac arrest.
It is currently unclear who called 911.
“We responded to the 1800 block of Blue Sail Road for a death investigation on a male 4:10 p.m. this afternoon. He was in his 50s,” the police was quoted as saying.
Born in Massachusetts in 1969, Perry began his acting career in the 1980s.
He landed his breakout role as Chandler Bing in ‘Friends’.
The sitcom made him a household name and earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2002.
Perry, who was not married and had no children, had a long history of drug and alcohol abuse.
He opened up about his decades-long battle with addiction in a memoir titled ‘Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing’, which was published in 2022.
The actor also claimed he had spent close to $9 million getting sober over the years and added that he had been drug and alcohol-free since May 2021.
