The management of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) in Lapai, Niger state has asked its lecturers to shun the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
In a statement on Tuesday, Baba Akote, its spokesperson, directed lecturers at the institution to resume for the 2021/2022 second semester academic session on September 5.
According to him, the varsity’s governing council held its 55th regular meeting and resolved that its academic and non-academic staff should resume work.
“Students are please advised to heed to this special announcement in their own interest,” he said.
Reacting to the directive, Kudu Dangana, ASUU chairman at the institution, asked members of the union to disregard the directive.
Dangana said the varsity’s ASUU is in solidarity with the ongoing strike by its national body and would not adhere to the directive.
He wondered why the institution’s management asked the lecturers to resume despite giving it a letter of extension of the ongoing ASUU strike.
“Any student that resumes is wasting his money and time or he is coming to see the campus. We have not called off the strike,” he told Daily Trust.
In the same vein, Adamu Isah, the chapter’s chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and joint action committee (JAC), said the body has not suspended its strike.
ASUU has been on strike since February 14 over the federal government’s alleged failure to meet its demands.
On Monday, the union extended its strike and vowed not to back down until its demands are met.
