Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael, Nigerian singer better known as Zlatan Ibile, says Nigerians on the streets love him and his music because they feel he was less privileged and had fewer opportunities to himself as an upcoming artiste.
The 24-year-old ‘This Year’ crooner made this known during a recent interview with Hip TV while addressing widespread assumptions about him that he makes music only for people on the lower end of the socio-economic ladder.
“If you still listen to my music and you’re updated, you’ll know that I don’t make songs for the street people alone. Because of my story, background and the type of upbringing I had, people love me on the street. They feel I was less privileged and had fewer opportunities,” he said.
“Now, it’s far beyond just the street love. It now cuts across different factions and borders. If you listen to my new song ‘Bolanle’ and ‘This Year’, they’re totally different. I have a project coming up, my album. When you listen, you’ll see a new dimension to Zlatan.
“Actually, yes, the street love is crazy. But now, it’s far beyond that. I never knew I was the most featured artiste. I had just been recording my own songs and, in the process, other artistes tell me they want me on their track as well. I’m never tired of making music.”
There is no gainsaying that his music has received widespread acceptance among the youth and average citizens in Nigeria.
Recently, he was spotted engaging with the less privileged while driving through the suburbs in the commercial city of Lagos.
The street singer, however, came under intense criticism on social media few days ago after he made a song mocking Tacha’s “body odour”.
