Tunde Kelani screens new film shot with smartphone at iREP festival

Tunde Kelani, legendary filmmaker, has screened ‘Yoruba Without Borders’, his first film shot with a smartphone, at the 2019 edition of the iREP international documentary film festival.

Speaking on the development, Kelani, who joined the league of global filmmakers who now use smartphones for film productions, said he was inspired to substitute camera with smartphone in the film production after seeing ‘Unsane’, a movie shot by Steven Soderberg, an American film director.

“The phone today is more than just a tool for communication. Once you are familiar with the gadgetry, you can use it for your film and nowadays almost all the softwares found on the camera is available on a smartphone,” said Kelani on Thursday.

The filmmaker collaborated with Bola Bello, a creative director, to produce the movie, which was shot for nine days, while the post-production lasted for six weeks.

‘Yoruba Without Borders’ portrays the lives of Yorubas living in Port Novo, Republic of Benin and celebrates their cultural heritage. The movie also explains how the language blurs the seeming borders and promote humanity.

This year marks the ninth edition of iREP international documentary film festival which over the years has celebrated works of aspiring and renowned filmmakers .

The festival, which began on Thursday, March 22, is expected to continue till Sunday, March 24, with a lineup of films and panel discussions.
