Afrobeats is one of Africa’s biggest exports. The music genre began to experience widespread mainstream acclaim in the late 2010s.

Wizkid sparked controversy on social media recently after he asked the public not to label him an “Afrobeats artiste”.

The ‘Essence’ hitmaker said although he is African, he “makes all sorts of music”.

He explained that referring to every song as Afrobeats is why Nigerian artistes are only nominated in “African categories” of music awards like the Grammys.

His remarks, however, generated a wave of criticism on social media.

Joining the fray, Terry Tha Rapman took to X to voice his disapproval with Wizkid.

The rapper referenced Wizkid’s statement in 2022 where he declared rap “dead” and “boring”.

He also argued that the singer now wants to put the lid on the global progression of Afrobeats with his controversial statement.

He further said the ‘Ojuelegba’ hitmaker might set his sights on Highlife next.

“First rap, now Afrobeats. How many genres Wizkid wan kill? Highlife, run o!” Terry Tha Rapman wrote.

He has received several recognitions for his craft, including the Headies Award for Best Rap Single in 2010 for the remix of his song ‘Sample’.

Wizkid, on the other hand, has enjoyed massive global recognition and awards.

In November, the singer hinted that he was on a five-year hiatus from music.
