Despite soaring on compelling cinematography and effects, the movie’s plot elements were predictable.

‘Jagun Jagun’, set in ancient Yorubaland, tells the tale of a young man who is determined to become a powerful warrior. He joins an elite army while encountering the wrath of a maniacal warlord and the love of a fierce woman.

THE STRONG POINTS OF THE FILM

The performance of the cast was outstanding. Every cast in the movie, both major and minor, understand their roles and were very professional in bringing it to life. ‘Jagun Jagun’ also pushes actors to step into roles distinct from their usual. For example, Tayo ‘Ijebu’ Amokade, who is known as a comic actor, was portrayed in a different light.

The film’s cinematography is impressive. It employs the best visual effects ranging from the camera angles to the special effects.

It is evident that detailed research was carried out through the costume, stunts, makeup and location. The commitment to build an entire set that makes the ‘ancient era’ portray by the movie realistic is applaudable. It is also interesting to see that a Nollywood movie includes well-choreographed and not unnecessary stunts in its scenes.

THE WEAK POINT OF THE FILM

The major flaw of ‘Jagun Jagun’ is the plot. Even though the effort to make a difference can be seen with the twist and turns, it still feels like a story that has been seen before. Particularly the part where Ogunjimi’s wife talks about her womb being the source of his power. It is also predictable that Gbotija will finally find out his father was killed by Ogunjimi. Conclusively, the movie lacks the element of suspense.

The plot was also all over the place from the start with the mention of over three different kingdoms. This makes it hard to keep up with these kingdoms and their relevance in the movie.

The appearance of Ibrahim Chatta at the end of the movie is also questionable. Will there be a sequel?

FINAL VERDICT

‘Jagun Jagun’ gets a 6/10
