Doyin Okupe, a former aide to Goodluck Jonathan, ex-president of Nigeria, says Bolu Okupe, his gay son, will be celebrated in Nigeria someday.
The spotlight has continued to beam on Bolu after he publicly revealed his gay status in an Instagram post.
But Okupe had earlier expressed reservation about his son’s gay declaration, noting that homosexuality conflicts with his values of Christianity.
On Saturday, the 68-year-old politician shared a screenshot of a magazine on Facebook wherein another of his son was listed among 100 most influential Africans of 2017.
Okupe said he remains optimistic that Bolu would one day be celebrated in Nigeria and across the world in the same manner.
“This is also my son Dewunmi Okupe, one of Bolu Okupe’s five other brothers. I love all the children God has given me, Bolu inclusive,” he wrote.
“I pray for them to excel in their fields of endeavours. Bolu will still be celebrated on this wall, in Nigeria and globally, in the name of Jesus.”
Okupe said Bolu’s gay identity owes much to his stay in France where homosexuality is not a crime.
He also expressed optimism that his 27-year-old son would turn a new leaf and boldly declare his love for Christ the same way he announced his gay status.
“Bolu is not a criminal. He lives in France where homosexuality is not a crime. His present mindset and sexual orientation do not conform to Christian doctrine which I hold to with my life,” he added.
“But I am certain that with the boldness he has made his declaration, he will still use the same attribute to serve God and boldly declare His glory in Christ Jesus. Mark my words.”
