The next rated category is among the most coveted awards given out by the Headies.

It is the category that shows that an artiste (or group of artistes) have had a good run and are on the cusp of mainstream success.

According to the organisers of the award, it is a category “for the most promising act in the year under review”.

It is a highly competitive category, such that in 2016, Olamide Adedeji embarked on an onstage rant when his former signee, Lil Kesh, lost to Mavin star Reekado Banks.

The rant culminated in a Twitter back and forth between the YBNL Records owner and Don Jazzy, Mavin Records head honcho.

For the 2018 Headies, Maleek Berry, Mayorkun and Johnny Drille have been recognised for their hard work in the period under review, and consequently, were nominated.

Also nominated for this year’s next rated category are Chocolate City’s Dice Ailes and Zoro.

Another important category that recognises upcoming talent is rookie of the year.

The category honours artistes who have had “a successful year musically, with the absence of an album in the year under review”.

Kidi, Air Boy, Teni, Junior Boy, Peruzzi are the nominated artistes for rookie of the year.
