Folarin Falana, the Nigerian rapper fondly called Falz, has revealed why he stopped criticising the federal government.
Falz is known for delivering songs that address bad governance and societal ills. The songs include ‘Wehdone Sir’, ‘Child of the World’, ‘Talk’, and ‘Mr Yakubu’ among others. He was also involved in the #EndSARS protest against police brutality in October 2020.
However, speaking with TheCable Lifestyle during a private listening party for ‘Before The Feast‘, his latest extended play (EP), Falz said he stopped being critical of the government because he does not want to be seen as the bearer of complaints.
“You will see that guy. But I do not want that guy to get to a point where he is seen as ‘you guys just dey complain’. I do not want to ever get to that point. That is why I am taking a pause from just complaining. I want to rearrange how I am doing it,” he said.
“So how am I doing it? Am I doing it in a way that is just making everybody feel sad? We already know that we are in wàhálà. Why am I further soaking you in that emotion? I want to bring you out of that emotion in some way and that is what I am trying to do.”
Falz also said what differentiates his latest project from his previous body of works is the fact he did not “comment on the happenings in Nigeria”.
“What differentiates this project from my other works? Maybe this is the project or there is no atom, no iota of attack or commentary as regards the happenings,” he said.
“Like I said, because of the theme, because of the direction, you know of course that would have been out of place. I do not think there is, even lyrics-wise not even a brief mention I can see of right now. That is definitely what differentiates this project from the rest.”
Falz released ‘Before The Feast’, a six-track project on Friday. He had put out ‘Ndi Ike‘ featuring Flavour and Odumodublvck off the EP.
The singer started to make a name in the Nigerian music space in 2009.
Falz has also had an impressive music career which has seen him win several awards including ‘Album of the Year’ at the 2016 edition of the City People Entertainment.
Aside from being a rapper, Falz has also featured in several movies.
He made his movie debut in ‘Couple of Days’ (2016).
