Olayemi Adejare and Oluwatobi Orekoya, two abducted students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta, Ogun state, have regained freedom.
The two students were abducted by gunmen on Friday on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
They were kidnapped alongside Adigun Agbaje, former deputy vice-chancellor (academics) of the University of Ibadan (UI).
Their abduction had triggered calls by many Nigerians on security operatives to ensure they are released.
Colleagues of the students were also said to have initiated a fundraiser to facilitate their release.
It is understood that the kidnappers originally demanded the sum of N10 million for each of the students but later slashed the amount after appeals from their families.
According to PUNCH, Segun Orekoya, Oluwatobi’s close relative, confirmed her release. Segun said Oluwatobi and her friend were released after two days in the kidnappers’ den.
“It is confirmed, they have been released this evening. The two girls were released after the kidnappers collected N2. 2 million ransom,” Segun said.
“They are presently home with their families, but I am not at the family’s house right now, I don’t have the full details, but I know they have been released.”
Adewale Osifeso, spokesman of Oyo police command, did not respond to calls and text message sent to him as of the time of this report.
