‘Tope Alabi is a mother to me’ — Alaseyori breaks silence on ‘Oniduro Mi’ saga

Adeyinka Alaseyori, Nigerian gospel singer, has described Tope Alabi as “our mother” amid the backlash trailing the former’s critique of ‘Oniduro Mi E Se’, her 2020 song.

Alabi had come under fire on social media after a video of her openly criticising the wordings of Alayesori’s song surfaced.

“Oniduro” in Yoruba translates to “guarantor”. But in the now-viral video, Alabi argued to her audience, albeit without calling the singer’s name, that her creator is more than a guarantor as depicted in Alaseyori’s song.

“Those who are not the owners of the song get angry that we tell them these things. I’ve done a song before such that I had to change the wordings later. God is not a guarantor. Let’s think about these things among ourselves,” she had said.

Her stance had birthed backlash as many Nigerians condemned her for allegedly trying to undermine the efforts of her colleague.

Breaking her silence over the saga during a virtual ceremony to commemorate her birthday, Alaseyori called for calm amid the ensuing drama.

The musician also urged people to allow “Jesus to take the wheel”, noting that she had been blessed alongside others by Alabi’s ministrations on several occasions.

“Let Jesus take the wheel. Mummy Tope Alabi is our mother. She’s a mother to me and so many others and by virtue, we have been blessed by her ministrations. Please, let us worship and celebrate God. Let Jesus be at the centre of it,” she said in a video.
