Tope Alabi has taken the centre stage of Nigeria’s Twitter discourse after publicly disapproving of ‘Oniduro Mi E Se’, a 2020 gospel song by Adeyinka Alaseyori.

A video of Alabi critiquing the song while on stage at an event surfaced and went viral on the microblogging platform.

“Oniduro” in Yoruba translates to “guarantor”. Alabi argued to her audience, albeit without calling the singer’s name, that her creator is more than a guarantor as against the wordings of Alaseyori’s now-popular gospel song.

“I liked that song but the day I sang it, the spirit shut me up. God is more than a guarantor. It’s not that I say the song is bad. As songs interact with the spirit, there should be communion before it manifests,” she said in Yoruba.

“If it’s the way the spirit says things that we speak, people will speak gibberish. God has given us the brain to digest, chew it well, and bring it back to life. God is more than a guarantor. It was the day I wanted to sing it that I knew.

“Those who are not the owners of the song get angry that we tell them these things. I’ve done a song before such that I had to change the wordings later. God is not a guarantor. Let’s think about these things among ourselves.”

Alabi’s stance on the issue generated a flurry of reactions on Twitter,  a lot of which were condemnatory.

“Alabi publicly condemned Yinka Alaseyori’s ‘Oniduro Mi’ song but God changed the criticism to free PR. Genesis 50:20, ‘But as for you, you meant evil against me but God meant it for good,” A Twitter user wrote.

Another Twitter user added: “To me, she spoke from a deliberate perspective with limited knowledge of the subject matter. She can as well call the person and chat up rather than an open mic.

“Whatever happens, it’s a case study for us all to learn in terms of tolerance and respect.”
