The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU) are set to host the 11th edition of the African University Games.

Chidiebere Ezeani, acting secretary general of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), announced the development in a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement, the sports at the competition will be divided into two categories.

“Category 1: Individual Sports: Athletics, Badminton, Chess, Judo, Table Tennis, Tennis, Karate, Taekwondo, Swimming,” Ezeani said.

“Category 2: Team Sports: Basketball, Football, Volleyball, and Handball.”

Ezeani said Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the African university sports community during the commissioning of projects at LASU earlier in the month.

On her part, Folasade Ogunsola, the vice-chancellor of UNILAG, outlined plans to enhance the university sports centre, including the recently commissioned 240-bed sports hostel.

“We will leverage the excellent facilities developed during the NUGA Games in 2021,” Ogunsola said.

The 11th African University Games promise to celebrate athleticism, unity, and cultural exchange, further solidifying Nigeria’s commitment to the growth of sports on the continent.

It is billed to be held between September 20 and 29, 2024.
