From the calls for Brymo’s AFRIMA disqualification to the tragedies that struck showbiz, TheCable Lifestyle examines the top entertainment stories of the past week.
BRYMO PROVOKES THE IGBO COMMUNITY
Brymo’s controversial comment widely interpreted as “derogatory” against the Igbo community provoked a chorus of condemnation last week as thousands of Nigerians petitioned the 8th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) to strip him of his nomination.
The singer had said the Igbo people are not yet ripe for the presidency. He had also taken a swipe at Chimamanda Adichie, the author, who is also of Igbo extraction, for accepting a chieftaincy title while rejecting a national award.
The Ara crooner would later apologise for his remark, adding that “I did not insult the tribe. I am sorry to anyone to whom it sounded as such. I was trying to weigh into a very important matter.”
IRETI CONFIRMS DIVORCE FROM PATRICK DOYLE
Ireti Doyle, the veteran actress, confirmed her divorce from Patrick Doyle, the ace actor and broadcaster.
The pair tied the knot in 2004. But in an interview, the film star said she had no business being married at the time she did, adding that some things are beyond one’s control.
“When you’re an adult, it’s not a life and death situation…there are some situations that are way beyond your control,” she added.
“The truth of the matter is that I had no business being married at that time talk less of… let’s not even go to the choice of who I got married to.”
Ireti, however, did not go into details of their split.
NOLLYWOOD LOSES TWO ICONS
Nollywood was dealt a huge blow last week following the deaths of Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, founder of the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), and Femi Ogunrombi, the actor who played the lead character in the family sitcom ‘Papa Ajasco’.
Prior to her demise last Tuesday, the filmmaker was critically ill and in a coma. The nature of Anyiam-Osigwe’s ailment, however, remained undisclosed.
The circumstances surrounding Ogunrombi’s death also remained unknown — as of the time of this report.
Ogunrombi played the bald-headed lead character of the family sitcom as a stand-in for Abiodun Ayoyinka.
KANYE WEST REPORTEDLY REMARRIES
On the international scene, Kanye West reportedly held a ‘private wedding with Bianca Censori, the architectural designer of Yeezy, a former fashion collaboration between West and German sportswear company Adidas.
While West is yet to deny the report, this is the third woman the rapper will be romantically linked with since his divorce from Kim Kardashian.
In November 2022, the music mogul and Kim finally ended their eight-year-old marriage last year, citing “irreconcilable differences”.
