Tems and Muyiwa Awoniyi, her manager, have dismissed a claim that she initially refused to allow the sampling of her song ‘Higher’ for the Grammy-winning track ‘Wait For U’.

‘Wait For U’ is a track from US rapper Future’s 9th studio album, featuring Tems and Drake.

The song fetched Tems her first-ever Grammy award win in 2023.

But in a recent interview with Ballers Alert, ATL Jacob, the song’s producer, discussed the origin of the track, which samples a live rendition of Tems’ 2020 song ‘Higher’.

Jacob alleged that Tems initially refused to clear the song’s use of ‘Higher’ until Future asked Drake to intervene in the matter.

“Tems wouldn’t clear the song, they just completely said no. So Future pulled in his relationship with Drake. Can you get the song cleared? Then Drake had to call Tems,” he said.

When asked if they both spoke after the song got cleared, the producer said, “I talked to her at the Grammys. Personally, I felt like she was a little irritated with the ‘Wait for You’ song”.

“I told her, ‘You ain’t gotta thank me or nothing. … I just wanna work.’ And we never got locked in.”

Reacting to Jacob’s claim, Awoniyi took to X to share a clip from the interview, saying “every single word uttered here is untrue”.

“Every single word uttered here is untrue. You even made up scenarios that never happened. It is shocking how someone can be so bold yet so wrong. Highly disappointing, do better,” he wrote.

In his reply to Awoniyi, Jacob said: “I gave my side of the story about me creating a HIT song after being INSPIRED by the song i sampled .. someone reacting so Negatively to a subject that meant no harm SHOWS A LOT Out of all the good shit i said about you @temsbaby over the years this the only reaction i get?”

Awoniyi fired back at Jacob while reiterating that the producer was “lying”.

“We cleared the record immediately. Got no call from drake and lastly had no such convo at the Grammys. Tems won’t reply you. But I have your time,” he said.

In another tweet, the producer also said he was ready to send Tems and her team $100,000 if they could show proof of him speaking “negatively about her”.

“All this negativity coming to me. I got a $100,000 wire transfer for Tems and her team to find me one time I spoke negatively about her,” he added.

Tems eventually responded to Jacob’s allegation in a series of posts on X wherein she urged him to “stop telling lies”.

“I LOVE THIS STORY. Look at the phrasing. Magnificent,” she wrote.

“Its not about saying anything negative STOP TELLING LIES. I’ll give you 1 million.”
