“Jessica was a beautiful young girl and in our last speech, prize and graduation day, she contested in the Miss Dyege pageant organised by the college and won the crown”, said Timothy Tyoyange, Jessica’s class teacher, who said she was eager to learn.

Jessica Beer, a student of Dyege Memorial College, Akpehe, Makurdi, Benue state, had told her friend that her future plans with were in jeopardy as she could not bear the pain the rejection would cause her.

Her friend told Punch that Jessica bought a knife a day before she died and wanted to go to her boyfriend’s place where she threatened to take revenge.

Beer’s friend said she dissuaded her from carrying out the act, but the next day, Jessica was found on the floor vomiting blood.

She was rushed to the hospital where she was confirmed dead by Atser Terkimbi, chief nurse at Yiman hospital who was reported to have said she ingested a deadly substance.

At Beer’s school, students and teachers were confused over her irrational act. Her classmates were surprised Beer could commit suicide over a man who was labelled “a cultist and an armed robber”.
