Paul Makonda, governor of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s biggest city, is considering plans to publish the identities of all married men in the country in a bid to protect single women from “unnecessary heartbreaks”.

Makonda disclosed this on Monday while addressing complaints from women who were abandoned by their lovers after a marriage proposal.

According to him, the authorities in Dar es Salaam would be meeting with the agency in charge of Tanzania’s database to facilitate the process and reduce the cases of men conning women.

“I have been receiving complaints from women who have been promised marriage by men, yet the men didn’t fulfill the promise. I know women who have been paying bills yet the men walked away,” he said in native Kiswahili.

“If possible we will set up a database in the regional commissioner’s office in each region that every man who promises a woman marriage, this should be registered in the database which will allow women to check to see whether the person asking is married.

“Many women from the Dar es Salaam region have been deceived many times and have had enough. Men have been promising to marry the ladies and later ditch them and this is something so humiliating.

“These cunning men have left many women nursing heartbreaks and emotional bruises. You’ll find a young man successfully wooing a woman, making her leave every other thing that she does, hoping that the man will marry her.

“We are planning to meet the State agency in charge of the citizens’ database. Once that meeting is done, you, who lied to a woman that you will marry her, but ended up using and dumping her, be prepared. We’re coming for you.”

Once adopted, all married men will be required to register their marital status with the region’s database agency.

Any woman who has been promised marriage can then access the database to confirm the marital status of her man-to-be.

Makonda’s statement comes less than two weeks after Mike Sonko, Nairobi governor, asked aggrieved women to contact his office with evidence of their husbands’ promiscuity via two phone numbers.

“All great women of this country, if there is an MP, Senator, Governor, civil servant or businessman who has impregnated you and denied responsibility, send me their details we expose him and seek DNA tests when he’s still alive,” he had said.
