The 14th governing council of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Plateau state has approved the appointment of Tanko Ishaya as the new vice-chancellor (VC).

According to NAN, Abdullahi Abdullahi, the UNIJOS deputy registrar for information and publications,  announced Ishaya’s appointment in a statement on Friday.

He said the development follows the council’s consideration of the recommendation of the joint council and senate selection board at its special meeting.

Abdullahi said that Ishaya’s appointment would take effect from December 1 for a single term of five years.

Ishaya takes over from Gray Ejikeme, whose term as acting VC expires on November 30.

Ishaya, 57, is currently the deputy VC (academic) of the university and a professor of computer science.

He has a background in mathematics, with experience in data engineering, computer security, and forensics.

He obtained his B.Sc. in mathematics education and graduated with a second class upper division in 1992 at UNIJOS.

Ishaya began work as a lecturer in the mathematics department at the College of Agriculture, Zuru, Kebbi state.

He later proceeded to the University of Manchester, UK to pursue an M.Sc. programme in computation and completed the programme in 1997.

He enrolled for his Ph.D. in computing studies which he completed in 2001 and was promoted to the rank of professor of computer science in 2012.
