Ruger, the Nigerian singer and songwriter, has opened up about his first heartbreak experience.
In a recent interview on the Bro Bants podcast, the 25-year-old revealed that he experienced his first heartbreak when he was just six years.
He said there was “an aunty” he liked, and she likewise used to call him her “boyfriend,” which led him to believe that they were in a relationship.
The ‘Red Flags’ hitmaker said he was, however, left “heartbroken” and “traumatised” when he saw her having sex with another guy.
Ruger also revealed that it was the experience that led to his “toxicity”.
“The last time that I experienced heartbreak, I was very, very young. There was this aunty that I liked, she used to call me ‘my boyfriend.’ So, I assumed that she was my woman. I was just 6 years old,” he said.
“I got heartbroken because one day, I saw some guy smashing her through her window. The guy was t*****g her up. I cried. I was traumatised. I started singing ‘Imagine That’ by Styl-Plus. That was what started my toxicity. That experience broke my heart.”
Born Michael Adebayo, Ruger rose to prominence in 2021 after signing a record deal with D’Prince’s Jonzing World Record, an affiliate of Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records.
The same year, he released ‘Pandemic’, his first extended play (EP), which gained massive traction.
In February 2024, he confirmed his exit from Jonzing World Record and unveiled Blown Boy Entertainment, his own record label.
The singer earlier revealed his plan to get married this year.
