In the latest episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, the movie star said she had to leave because “colourism was normalised in the Indian film industry”.

The actress said she was considered “dusky” and was “lightened up in many movies”.

“I remember when I joined movies, I was considered dusky, written as the dusky actress and I was like ‘What is dusky? What does it mean?” Chopra asked.

“I was lightened up in many movies. Through make-up and then blasting lighting.

“There was a song which I still remember, it was called ‘Chitti Dudh Kudi’ which means a girl who is as white as milk and I ain’t that but I was playing her and I was really lightened up in the movie.”

Chopra also said they were other reasons like the politics in the Indian movie industry.

The award-winning movie star said she was “pushed to the corner”.

“I was being pushed into a corner in the industry. I had people not casting me for reasons,” she said.

“I had a beef with people. Again, I’m not good at playing that game. I was tired of the politics and I said I needed a break.”

Since winning the Miss World pageant in 2000, Chopra has established herself as one of the most popular talents in the global entertainment industry.
