Jude ‘MI’ Abaga, the Nigerian rapper, has called out Erisco Foods Limited for allegedly using his song to advertise their products without his authorisation.
The food company has been in the news since September last year after Chioma Egodi, a consumer gave a bad review of Erisco’s product on social media.
Egodi claimed she tasted one of the company’s tomato paste products but found it sugary.
She, however, deleted the post after accompanying it with the picture of the opened can.
Reacting to the post, Erisco described the claim as “untrue”.
Egodi was later arrested by the police based on the petition by Eric Umeofia, president and CEO of Erisco.
In a statement on Thursday by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the force PRO, the police also reiterated that it will prosecute Egodi.
Mixed reactions have since trailed the food company over the way they handled the situation, with some social media users demanding a boycott of Erisco products.
But in a now-deleted tweet, the food company reiterated the quality of its product. It allegedly used MI’s song ‘Nobody’ — featuring 2Baba — as a background soundtrack.
Reacting to the tweet, the rapper wrote “Interesting” while also sharing a CHATGPT response to a question on the unauthorised use of his song.
“Is it legal for a brand to use my song without a license? Even if it’s just for a social media ad,” his post reads.
“No, it’s not legal for a brand to use your song without a license, even for a social media ad. Using copyrighted material without permission can lead to legal consequences for the brand.”
