The Super Eagles of Nigeria were defeated 2-1 by Cote d’Ivoire in the AFCON final held on Sunday night at the Olympic Stadium, Ebimpe, Abidjan.

After the match, Iwobi was targeted by trolls on social media who accused him of putting out a poor performance at the tournament.

“Just here to say unequivocally that Alex Iwobi has no future in the Super Eagles. He’s awful. He is rubbish. He is not him,” an X user wrote.

The backlash also extended to his family, with a user targeting Daniella Okocha, Iwobi’s cousin, asking her to tell Jay-Jay Okocha, her father, to exclude Iwobi from future national team selections.

“Go tell your papa make e no dey slot Iwobi to Nigeria team again,” the troll wrote.

In response, Daniella vowed to block anyone leaving negative comments on her page.

“This rubbish will not be tolerated on my page. You will be blocked. Thanks,” she wrote.

Checks by TheCable Lifestyle on Monday showed that Iwobi has deleted almost all his posts on Instagram. He, however, left a December 2023 clothing advertisement post.

The Fulham star also disabled the comment section of his Instagram page to prevent anyone from sending him messages.
