Facebook and Instagram on Wednesday introduced new features to help you limit the time you spend online.

The social media platforms — both owned by Facebook — say the new tools will help people manage their use of the apps.

Moving forward, users will also be able to keep track of how much time they have spent on the platforms courtesy of a dashboard designed for that purpose.

Facebook and Instagram will now have an activity dashboard, a daily reminder, and an icon to limit notifications.

The daily reminder will alert users when they reach the time limit they set for themselves.

Ameet Ranadive, product management director at Instagram, and David Ginsberg, director of research at Facebook, said the tools were created to give users more control over their time.

“We want the time people spend on Facebook and Instagram to be intentional, positive and inspiring,” the pair said in a joint statement.

“Our hope is that these tools give people more control over the time they spend on our platforms and also foster conversations between parents and teens about the online habits that are right for them.”

To access the tools, go to the settings page on either app. On Instagram, tap ‘Your Activity’ and on Facebook, tap ‘Your Time on Facebook’.

Facebook says the tools were developed in collaboration with mental health experts and organisations, academics, Facebook’s extensive research, and feedback from its community.
