The concertgoer charged with assualting Bebe Rexha, the American singer, by throwing a phone at her claimed he “thought it would be funny”.
The man, identified as Nicolas Malvagna, threw his phone at the singer’s face while performing at a concert in Lower Manhattan, New York, on Sunday.
The incident left Rexha injured as officials rushed her off the stage to enable her get medical attention.
According to BBC, the New York City police arrested and charged Malvagna with “two counts of assault in the third degree and one count of harassment in the second degree”.
The police also charged him with “one count of aggravated harassment in the second degree and one count of attempted assault in the third degree”.
He was arraigned before the Manhattan Criminal Court on Monday.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office revealed that the 27-year-old concertgoer confessed he “intentionally threw” his phone at the musician.
“I was trying to see if I could hit her with the phone at the end of the show because it would be funny,” he was quoted as telling a police officer at the concert venue.
Malvagna is scheduled to appear before the court again on July 1.
Rexha had earlier doused the fears over her safety following the incident.
The musician is scheduled to continue her ongoing US tour in Philadelphia on June 20.
The singer, born Bleta Rexha, was signed by Warner Record’s, the music label, in 2013.
