Burna Boy, the Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, has surprised fans with a new track titled ‘Update’.
The singer, who had not hinted at releasing any new music, announced the song by posting a snippet on Instagram.
In ‘Update’, Burna Boy samples Soul II Soul’s 1989 hit song ‘Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)’.
“On a normal day/ Them no fit touch my energy/ Agba/ A bori ntayin/ If I no get money/ Na disability/ Baba o/ Ma lo sa o/ Beri fun won kawo/ Agbabiaka ooo/ Gba update ko le pawo/ Won le won o ba o/ Take them to Jaka o/ Ma lo wa o/ Omo oba Jesu/ Oko ashawo,” he sings.
The song is accompanied by a colourful video. Burna Boy also hinted that his next album might be titled ‘No Sign Of Weakness’.
The song’s release comes barely a day after the singer cleared all posts from his Instagram feed, where he has 17.6 million followers.
Burna Boy, however, retained some photos and videos from his Instastories.
He also replaced his profile pictures across platforms, including Instagram, X, and YouTube with a black loading icon.
Born Damini Ogulu, Burna Boy gained fame after releasing ‘Like to Party’, the lead single from his debut album ‘L.I.F.E’ (2013).
Since then, he has released seven albums: ‘L.I.F.E’ (2013), ‘On a Spaceship’ (2015), ‘Outside’ (2018), ‘African Giant’ (2019), ‘Twice As Tall‘ (2020), ‘Love, Damini‘ (2022) and ‘I Told Them‘ (2023).
He has also won several awards. In 2021, the Afro-fusion artiste won the ‘Best World Music Album’ category at the Grammy Awards for his fifth album ‘Twice As Tall’.
In April, the Port Harcourt-born singer made the Time Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people for 2024.
