Florence Otedola, a Nigerian disk jockey (DJ) better known as Cuppy, says she would be performing in Saudi Arabia — months after Nicki Minaj, US singer, pulled out of a concert in the country over women’s rights concerns.
Cuppy took to her Twitter page on Monday to make the announcement — weeks after she had staged a grandiose fundraising event for her northeast intervention scheme alongside ‘Save the Children’, a UK-based foundation.
“As a female DJ I’m so proud to be performing in Saudi Arabia!,” the 27-year-old philanthropist wrote as fans took to the comment box to cheer at the move and encourage her to “keep representing the country.”

In July, Minaj had yielded to the Human Rights Foundation (HRF) and pulled out of a planned concert, which was billed to hold in Jeddah, in solidarity for women’s rights, gay rights, and freedom of expression.
“While I want nothing more than to bring my show to fans in Saudi Arabia, after better educating myself on the issues, I believe it is important for me to make clear my support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community and freedom of expression,” she had said.
Although there appears to be no imminent threat, Cuppy’s performance would be coming at a time when Saudi Arabia is working to address concerns with regard to gender discrimination as the country had, only in 2017, allowed women driving.
Similarly, Saudi Arabia had lifted the ban on women’s entry into stadia as part of efforts towards development — after years of having barred them from sports arenas by strict rules on segregation of sexes in public places.
