Charly Boy, Nigerian entertainer and human rights activist, says he married his wife, Diane Oputa, because she made him a “peaceful and happy man”.

He made the disclosure on Monday as Diane, better known as Lady D, marked her 60th birthday.

“I didn’t marry you due to lack of options, I married you for one pure selfish reason,” the 67-year-old grandfather wrote in an Instagram post.

“You woke up beside me one morning some four decades ago and uttered those words ‘marry me or I leave’.

“I figured out that the little girl in you will make the boy in me a peaceful and happy man. Good job I was right!”

The controversial star had, in December 2018, formally walked his wife down the aisle after 40 years of being together, following his aged mother’s insistence that they “do the right thing”.

Charlie Boy, who now has nine children and 16 grandchildren, married for the first time at the age of 19.
