November 11 being a memorable day for singles in Chinese history, the Chinese programmer resident in Guangzhou decided to make the day more blissful via a bizarre proposal.

On Monday, the programmer bought 99 units of iPhone 6 and stacked them up in a love shape (pictured).

He thereafter invited friends and proposed to the young lady.

Everyone was short of words as she declined his proposal.

The phones reportedly cost the man over RMB 500,000 (about N12.6m), which was an equivalent of his two years’ salary, yet his ‘Romeo gesture’ was served a poisonous pill with a rejection.

Since the inception of Singles Day in China in 1993, millions of singles throughout the country celebrate it by trying to woo a special person. Some even go to the length of purchasing expensive diamond rings and other extravagant prizes, but this programmer raised this year’s stakes.

November 11 was chosen as Singles Day in China due to the peculiarity of the date, 11/11, which is seen as four lonely ‘1s’.

The culture originated from Nanjing University, the 2011 edition (11/11/11) marking the Singles Day of the Century with six lonely ‘1s’.
