A 32-year-old factory worker, Ifeanyi Chukwu, who allegedly beats and threatens to kill his mother, appeared before an Abule Egba Magistrates’ court on Thursday.
Chukwu, who lives with his mother at 15 Adeniji street, Oko-Oba, Agege, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of assault, threatening by violence, and causing damage.
The prosecutor, Insp. Racheal Williams, told the court that the offences were committed on June 15 at their residence.
She said Chukwu always beat his mother whenever he was drunk, or whenever she rebuked him for coming home late.
Williams told the court that the accused also threatened to kill his mother and his sisters.
“A fight ensued between them and after beating his mother,” Williams said. “The accused damaged four windows and a wooden door, valued at N25,000.”
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 56, 170 and 349 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The mother, Mrs Helen Chukwu, described her son as irresponsible, adding that he smokes and always gets drunk whenever he is coming home.
“Anytime I rebuke him or try to advise him, he turns it to a fight, beats me and threatens to kill me,” she said
“I want him to go to Kirikiri Prison to learn a lesson so that when he returns, he would have been reformed.”
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, ordered the accused to be remanded in prison; and adjourned the case until June 23, 2014, for ruling on the bail application.

Hear the mother; ‘I want him to go to Kirikiri to learn a lesson so that when he returns he would be reformed’ Really? When he returns (to your house) he is coming to kill you. What exactly has been your role as a mother in the last 32 yrs? Did you turn blind eyes and deaf ears to silly misdemeanours all in the name of ‘he’s my only son’. Did you hide is wrongdoings from his father – if there was a responsible father, anyway -. You did not shape him at 3, 13 or 23 and you expect a miracle at 32? Ma’am, if at 32 your son lives with you, me think you are the greatest loser here. As the Yoruba saying goes; omo go, eni ko ma ku,.. kini o ba tun pa bi o s’ ago? A child is foolish and we say he should not die…what else would kill him if not his stupidity? By the way, while he goes to Kirikiri, the mother should also be taken to the failed parenthood tribunal for inability to raise a child in the proper manner.
