Laycon, the rapper and former BBNaija winner, has poured out his resentment at The Headies for not making its nomination list for this year’s award.
The organisers of the award announced the nominees for this year’s edition on Tuesday.
While a plethora of music heavyweights like Wizkid, Davido, Olamide, and Burna Boy got several nominations, other fast-rising artistes like Ayra Starr, Portable, and Ckay among others also made the list.
The reality star, who has put out a number of songs since leaving the BBNaija show in 2020 on a high note, was obviously missing from the list.
In a flurry of tweets on Wednesday, Laycon lamented that “emotion can set in” if someone works hard on his music career and thereafter doesn’t get recognition for their work.
“I have never been a fan of judging people with the adjective ‘BEST’. However, I see awards as a compliment; something to tell you, ‘Hey! We see everything you’ve done and we think you should get this for your efforts’,” he wrote.
“This doesn’t mean every other person didn’t put in work! Even TV stations, radio stations, OAPs etc. get ‘awards’ for their efforts, which doesn’t take away from the work every media body or personnel put into growing the industry, to be honest.
“But when you work hard and you feel like you don’t get recognition for your work, your emotions set in.”
The rapper also wondered why “A lot of people think I don’t deserve half of what I have and what I’m getting, so I’ve had to do double of whatever it is you’re supposed to do in this industry.”

But what matters is You and the gift you have, use it and use it well, change lives and impact your society, that’s the real award. Congratulations to the nominees of the Headies, congratulations to the organizers. I go wear another Big Shoe come this year.

Still on still, I appreciate the awards, the ones I have gotten and the ones I’m yet to have, and when I don’t get them, I feel some type of way because that’s how it is meant to be, you wanna be acknowledged for what you’ve done, but no be everybody go win award !!!

I think the best award you can have is what you already have, step on stage and people scream, cry, throw you bra, throw you pant, people stream your music, go to a show and squeeze themselves inside crowd just to see you or touch you, no be award be that!!!

“1-800-273-8255” by @Logic301 was just a song, didn’t get any award to my knowledge but increased number of calls to suicide helplines by 27%, visits to suicide help websites increased just because of the song. And there was reduction in suicides overall, That’s an AWARD !!!

— Laycon💡🐺 (@itsLaycon) May 25, 2022
But forget about Laycon, the artist who went to BBN to promote himself and his music and ended up winning the show for once. Y’all need to look inward, all of us wey Dey do music and wey Dey consume the music con Dey pick the best of the music and musicians, lol 😂.

I Dey emotional so I no go lie say a part of me no want award, because for someone coming from where I came from, a lot of people think I don’t deserve half of what I have and what I’m getting, so I’ve had to do double of whatever it is you’re supposed to do in this industry.

Even TV stations, radio stations, OAPs etc. get “awards” for their efforts, doesn’t take away from the work every media body or personnel put into growing the industry tbh. But when you work hard and you feel like you don’t get recognition for your work, your emotions set in.
