The singer won the much-coveted category ahead of Ayra Starr, Lojay, Ruger, and Zinoleesky.

The ‘Outside’ crooner also dedicated the award to his late mother, who he said died of cancer.

This year edition of the award, titled ‘Join the Movement’, was held in the early hours of Monday at the Cobbs Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, United States.

The category of the award usually comes with a car prize. The prize for this year is a 2022 Bentley.

Of the different categories, the ‘Next Rated’ has been one of the most exciting, contentious, and controversial.

It has become something of a trend spotter, highlighting musical acts that did well in the previous year.

As the name suggests, it also spotlights acts to achieve more milestones in the years to come.

In 2015, a heated drama ensued after Olamide faulted organisers of the award for naming Reekado Banks as winner of the category.

The ‘Rock’ crooner had argued that Like Kesh, who was signed to YBNL at the time, deserved to win the prize.

Omah Lay snagged the category last year ahead of Tems, Oxlade, and Bella Shmurda.

This is the first time the award ceremony would be held outside Nigeria since its inception in 2006.
