Ayodeji Balogun, the Grammy-winning Nigerian megastar better known as Wizkid, says the year 2023 showed him “shege”.
“Shege” is a slang that means different things to different people in Nigeria. It can refer to financial difficulties, physical or mental stress, difficult tasks or unexpected events.
In a recent post on his Instagram story, the Afrobeats star also said he is looking forward to a better 2024.
“23 show me shege! 24 be good to me!.”
Although Wizkid did not provide context to his post, TheCable Lifestyle reported that the singer lost his mum in August. She was also buried the following month.
The singer also referred to his mum’s death as “my deepest pain in life”.
Born in Surulere on July 16, 1990, Wizkid grew up in a polygamous home with a Muslim father and a Christian mother.
Known for his deep affection for his mother, the singer expressed it through his 2014 song ‘Mummy Mi’, which he dedicated to mothers worldwide.
With a huge fanbase, several awards, and honorary mentions, Wizkid is among the leading names in African music.
In November, the multiple award-winning singer hinted that he was on a five-year hiatus from music.
Wizkid, however, put out the second installment of ‘Soundman‘, his extended play (EP), in December.
