Akunna Okey, a contestant in the sixth edition of Nigerian Idol, has been eliminated from the music talent show after collecting the least votes in the last round of public voting
During the 14th episode, Akunna performed ‘Johnny’ by Yemi Alade as her first song. Her delivery was, however, met with criticism from Cobhams, Nigerian songwriter and producer, who noted that she gave a weak start to the rendition of the hit song.
In her second performance, she tried a comeback with ‘Only Girl (In the World)’ by Rihanna, Barbadian singer, but still failed to impress the seasoned vocalist.
Despite her display of energy and vocal prowess, the journey of the barrister-cum-singer in the show ended as her effort was not enough to keep her in the top 2.
This week’s episode of the show started with the group performance of 8 contestants, who had made it to the top eleven before their elimination.
The contestants include Comfort Alalade, Faith Jason, Clinton Francis, Beyonce Ajomiwe, Daniel Ikechi, Emmanuel Elijah, Dotun Deloye and Faith Mac.
They stormed the stage to give an electric performance of ‘24K Magic’, a 2016 song by Bruno Mars, American pop singer.
After the group performance, Akunna, who was the last woman standing, took to the stage to perform ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ by Adele — a song which was selected for rendition by the judges, being their favorite of all the songs she had performed during her stint on the show. The same method applied to Kingdom and Francis, who made it to the top 2.
Francis charged up the atmosphere with his rendition of ‘Sexual Healing’ by Marvin Gaye, John Legend’s ‘So high’, and a serene delivery of ‘Please forgive me’ by Brian Adams.
Kingdom, with every ounce of vocal tenacity, stunned the judges and the audience again with the soulful cover of ‘Say Something’ by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera, ‘Just the Way You Are’ by Bruno Mars, and ‘Lion’s Sleep Tonight’, a song by Lebo M, South African composer.
It will be a tough race as the top 2 contestants lock horns on Sunday to decide who will be crowned the Nigerian Idol.
