A senior lecturer in the department of English and Literature at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has been accused of raping a female student in his office.

The final-year student was said to have gone to the lecturer’s office to submit her project when she was allegedly raped.

It was gathered that the suspect locked the alleged victim in his office for several hours, preventing her from leaving until she contacted a friend who informed the school security.

The incident, which was said to have occurred on Tuesday, started to trend after a video purportedly recorded when the lecturer was begging for forgiveness went viral.

A coursemate of the female student was quoted as saying that the news of the alleged rape was first circulated on the class WhatsApp platform.

The student union led by Osaze Forster has vowed that the matter would not be swept aside.

When contacted by TheCable Lifestyle, Benedicta Ehanire, the varsity’s spokesperson, refused to comment on the matter.

Ehanire, however, said that the institution would issue a statement regarding the matter in due course.

“If it’s about UNIBEN, please wait. The university will issue a statement shortly,” she said before ending the call abruptly.
