Donald Trump, US President, has encouraged Oprah Winfrey to run against him in 2020 — but he says it will be a “painful experience” for her.
He said this while speaking at a rally for Rick Saccone, a congressman, in Pennsylvania.
The US President said the candidate he most wants to run against is Winfrey, a media mogul, actress and humanitarian.
“I would love Oprah to win [the Democratic party primary election],” Trump said, adding that: “I would love to beat Oprah. I know her weakness.
“Wouldn’t we love to run against Oprah. I would love it. I would love it. That would be a painful experience for her.”
Talk of Oprah running for president started in January after her speech at the 2018 Golden Globe awards.
The riveting and inspiring speech touched on sexual harassment, self assertiveness, press freedom and women’s rights.
On the night, she became the first black woman to win the Cecil B. de Mille Award.
Gayle King, her best friend, had subsequently said Winfrey was “very intrigued” about the idea of running for president.
“I do think she’s intrigued by the idea, I do think that,” King had said.
“I also know that after years of watching ‘The Oprah (Winfrey) Show’ you always have the right to change your mind. I don’t think at this point she’s actually considering it.”
Oprah would later say in an interview that she has prayed about the matter but is yet to get a response from God.
“I went into prayer. God, if you think I’m supposed to run, you gotta tell me, and it has to be so clear that not even I can miss it.’ And I haven’t gotten that,” the media mogul recently said.
