As the countdown to the gubernatorial elections in Nigeria draws near, several celebrities have continued to canvass votes for their preferred candidates.

The governorship and houses of assembly elections were initially fixed for March 11.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), however, shifted the date to March 18.

With a few days to the poll, Nigerians — including celebrities — have taken to the streets and social media platforms to campaign for their preferred candidates.

With the gubernatorial elections expected to be held across 24 states, TheCable Lifestyle, however, examines the three major candidates in Lagos garnering support from celebrities.

They include Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the incumbent governor who is contesting under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Azeez Olajide Adediran of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party (LP).

Babajide Sanwo-Olu

Sanwo-Olu is the incumbent governor of Lagos state. He is eligible to run for re-election and has been renominated by the All Progressives Congress (APC). Sanwo-Olu’s running mate is Obafemi Hamzat. 

  • Cubana Chief Priest 

The socialite is one of the celebrities who have come out to endorse Sanwo-Olu for a second term. The Imo-born wants Sanwo-Olu to “get one more term to perfect his amazing plans for Lagos state.”

  • Eniola Badmus

The actress has also shown her support for Sanwo-Olu to be re-elected.

Badmus said she believes in his ability to keep the transformation program of the state going.

“Mr Project, Babajide Olusola Sanwoolu, we are solidly behind you,” she said. 

  • Daddy Showkey

The ace musician shared a campaign flyer of the re-election of the APC candidate and his running mate on social media. 

“Tell your people about the medical mission going on in Ajegunle. @jidesanwoolu all the way,” he wrote.

Olajide Adediran 

Azeez Olajide Adediran of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has Funke Akindele, the film star, as his running mate. 

  • Alexx Ekubo

The actor endorsed Akindele while urging Lagosians to elect someone who is “accountable, empathetic, and accessible.”

“People want something different from the norm. This is why I believe in the Jandor/Funke campaign. Jandor ticks all the right boxes for Lagos at this time,” he said.

  • Ruth Kadiri

The actress took to her Instagram page to list her reasons why the deputy governorship candidate deserves to have her vote.

According to her, Akindele is hardworking, smart, tough and disciplined.

“You dare to tread where others won’t fly. You’re a risk taker. I trust you will do a good job, you have my vote,” Kadiri said. 

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour was a former member of the PDP but withdrew from the party to pitch his tent with the Labour Party (LP).

GRV, as he is widely called by his supporters, is an architect by profession. He said his mantra for the state is to be “the architect of a new Lagos.”

  • Nkechi Blessing

The actress is one of the few celebrities who endorsed GRV as governor of Lagos state.

Nkechi shared a photo of herself and the LP candidate on her Instagram page. She also urged Lagosians to get acquainted with him.

The actress showed her support for GRV who she believes can deliver “a new Lagos.”
