Police: Jigawa varsity student who ‘killed’ newborn referred to therapy amid probe

The Jigawa police command has commenced an investigation into the female student of the Federal University Dutse (FUD) who allegedly killed her newborn baby.

The lady, whose identity remains unknown, was said to have given birth to the infant inside the school hostel on Monday.

She allegedly threw the baby from the top floor of a three-storey hostel building.

In a now-viral video, some students of the varsity can be seen inquiring why the mother committed the act.

“You can see this girl o. Why did you do this?” one of the students asked.

Another footage showed some students screaming as they watched the lifeless body of the baby on the floor.

In the clip, the varsity’s department of works came in a vehicle to take the deceased baby and mother away.

Lawan Shiisu Adam, Jigawa police spokesperson, addressed the incident in a statement to TheCable Lifestyle on Tuesday.

Adam said the 200-level student is receiving medical care and responding to therapy.

He added that the law enforcement agency has commenced an investigation into the matter.

“A team of Policemen raced to the scene of a crime and conveyed the baby and mother to Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital Dutse where the infant was certified dead by a medical doctor on call,” the statement reads.

“Meanwhile, the suspect was admitted and responded to therapy. An investigation is ongoing.”
