Pete Edochie, veteran Nollywood actor, has provoked a heated dispute on social media over comments he made concerning men who kneel down to propose to women.
In a video that surfaced on the internet on Thursday, the actor said any Nigerian man who kneels down to propose to a woman is an idiot.
Edochie was airing his views on the practice that has become a signature of many Nigerian marriage proposals.
“Any young man who gets on his knees to propose to a girl is not just an idiot, he’s a bloody fool, a compound buffoon,” he had said.
His comment has since sparked arguments on social media platforms especially Twitter where users are registering their differing opinions.
“Kneeling is symbolic. When pple kneel to pray, or when Knights kneel to kings, it’s to pledge loyalty & devotion. Men do it during proposals for the same reason. But Pete Edochie thinks it means the lady takes over d family. Maybe he’s only wise in movies like they said,” a Twitter user wrote.
“Pete Edochie prefaced his comments on marriage proposal with a caveat that he is a firm believer and advocate of the “sacrocance” of the “essence” of Igbo culture. Now, to my fellow Igbos, show me the aspect of our culture that permits you to kneel when you propose? I want to learn,” said another user.
Here’s what some Nigerians had to say:
Kneeling is symbolic.
When pple kneel to pray, or when Knights kneel to kings, it's to pledge loyalty & devotion.
Men do it during proposals for the same reason. But Pete Edochie thinks it means the lady takes over d family.

Insulting Pete Edochie is pointless. Lol.
1. He's old and has lived all his life submerged in patriarchy
2. He's igbo
3. He's igbo.

Pete Edochie no get range sha. You’ll think Oga was acting, meanwhile all that time, he was just being himself lol!

But why are y’all triggered by that Pete Edochie’s video? Mans shared his opinion from the patriarchy that ruled his generation, and isn’t compelling anyone to do as he expects.
Or are you scared your man’s decision is that fragile?

Another proof that Nigerians can’t differentiate Nollywood from Reality.
Everyone automatically respects Pete Edochie’s opinion because they have deceived themselves into thinking he’s filled with wisdom because he spews cliché proverbs in nollywood movies. Tragic💔— Jollof Daddy • Educated Marlian (@partyjollof_) February 20, 2020
Papa Adeboye (who has been married for 53 years) and Pete Edochie (who has been married for 51 years) shared their views on marriage and relationship, you're bashing them.
You that can't even keep a relationship for 6 months forming woke on Twitter with your cheap data. Radarada!— Ajayi Taiwo 🔴 (@tayelolu_LordB) February 20, 2020
Contemporary & Culturally, kneeling down symbolises subservience & servility.
Psychologically, Kneeling is a sign of reverence, submissiveness, deference—or vulnerability.
If you think it symbolizes loyalty, then both sexes should bend the knee!
What if Pete Edochie was right? https://t.co/ujF0qC06fo

When you really get into the mindset of older Nigerians, you'd understand why we are where we are.
The older generation has nothing progressive to offer us and they show it every day.
Pete Edochie didn't make any sense here, his mindset on this subject is just horrible. https://t.co/Xx7MVgxBuh

I appreciate Pete Edochie for speaking the truth, we have finally been able to understand why marriages fail.
Women tricked us into kneeling and took our destiny but the time has come for us to take it back.
Now we must throw the ring on the floor for her to pick

“I strongly believe in MY culture”
Pete EdochieHe stated his reasons for not supporting a man kneeling but you that know nothing about HIS culture feel he‘s stupid & unwise for saying that.
The world will know peace when we listen to understand.— Tife🌚 (@Tife_fabunmi) February 20, 2020
Pete Edochie married his wife 51 years ago. He's giving you the manual he used for his marriage years ago to use in your 2020 marriage
But if lecturers give you their notebooks from their university days, y'all will start shouting "this is why Nigeria is not moving forward"

I stand with Pete Edochie. Spoke like a true Igbo man 👏👏
We copy too much, look how we now pay more attention to the white wedding rather than our own traditional wedding.
This days you won't even know when they do trad next thing they're inviting you for white wedding https://t.co/ydyfSPL5Tt— Onyekachi Elbalmy 🇳🇬 (@eLanBalmy) February 20, 2020
You are 18yo on twitter, but if Pastor Adeboye talk you insult him. Pete Edochie talk you insult him. Old people can no longer air their opinion again abi? These men have been married for over 50 years. Before your parents were even born. I no blame you. Na Jack give you platform

I don't get this, y'all are complaining about what Pete Edochie said about men kneeling to propose but y'all kept mute when some ladies said they won't kneel for their husbands during traditional marriage. pic.twitter.com/gFhCAFuoBC

Pete Edochie’s definition of love is not beating his wife, goals 😍
— ebele. (@ebelee_) February 21, 2020
A lady said she won’t kneel before her husband because “I’m not his slave/subordinate” and y’all feminist defended her with everything . Now Pete Edochie said a man shouldn’t kneel for a woman and y’all are attacking him ? Y’all confused or sumn ?
— WANDE (@BlaccMajek) February 21, 2020
Why is that its only the ladies that think Pete Edochie meant he was beating his wife, when he said "no one has ever come to say stop beating your wife"??? Why are you people slowww like this??? 😹😹😹😹💀😭😭😭

Pete Edochie is literally right, civilization is an enemy to traditions, culture and religions… This is nothing but the truth. pic.twitter.com/bD5F0r3eGb

Pete Edochie I thought he was a great actor, not knowing he was being himself all this time.
