Niyi Akinmolayan, the filmmaker, has advised actors against signing restrictive contracts that prohibit them from promoting other films in which they have appeared.

Taking to Instagram, Akinmolayan expressed understanding for the financial pressures actors face but urged them to recognise their greater value.

He argued that such clauses are ultimately counterproductive for an industry still striving for growth.

“Actors, I know you all need money but please stop signing contracts that tell you not to promote other films you are in,” he wrote.

“Nollywood is not that rich (Far from it) and you are worth more… you are a part of the necessary ingredients for growth in the industry. Don’t stifle yourself.”

In his caption, he encouraged actors to engage in serious self-reflection on the issue, writing, “You all should have the conversation with yourselves”.

While the specific incident that prompted his warning remains unclear, the post has ignited a debate online. Reactions have been mixed, with some commentators questioning the timing of his message during the festive season and others expressing outright disbelief at the existence of such contractual terms.

Actor Kunle Remi responded with shock, commenting, “Is this a joke? And the person presenting this contract expects colleagues not in the film to help promote it ‘abeg’??”
