Nigerians on Twitter have expressed their anger over the prosecution of Funke Akindele-Bello, Nollywood actress, for flouting the social distancing order, after a large number of people were seen at the funeral of Abba Kyari, Muhammadu Buhari’s chief of staff.
On April 7, the actress and her husband were sentenced to 14 days community service and a N100,000 fine each for violating social distancing laws, after she had hosted a house party at her residence in Lagos.
But on Sunday, a large number of people were also spotted at Kyari’s burial in Abuja, despite the presidency’s announcement of a private funeral.
The attendees also appeared to have stood close to each other — a clear violation of the social distancing directives.
This has since sparked angry reactions on Twitter where users have expressed their annoyance.
While a number of users drew comparison between the two incidents, others demanded that the people gathered at the funeral be given same punishment meted out on Akindele.
“I’m watching late Abba Kyari’s burial, live on TV. The Nigerian Govt should apologise to Funke Akindele and refund her money immediately,” a Twitter user said.
“Funke Akindele was arrested and arraigned for throwing a party in her house. Some politicians decided to organise a prayer session, hereby breaching the Presidential order & @NCDCgov guideline on social distancing, but no action will be taken because ‘proximity to power,” another user said.
Here is what some Nigerians had to say:
Over 800 people gathered to bid Abba Kyari goodbye in Gudu.
Cancel Funke Akindele's community service and fine now. Let her go free. pic.twitter.com/HT50ep6iwc

Everyone that is present here should be arrested and given same punishment Funke Akindele was given or rather even far much more, this is the height of insensitivity, everyone here deserves same punishment. Nigerian police needs to swing into action immediately about this! Periodt! pic.twitter.com/KMuRJmWdPv

You can call out d stupidity + the arrest of d attendees at the burial of Abba Kyari and still maintain that Funke Akindele was wrong for organizing that party.
They are not two mutually exclusive line of thoughts, saying Funke deserves an apology means u’re not a serious person

Funke akindele had her birthday party and was prosecuted for social gathering. I can see the notherners and politicians gathering together like iced fish inside a carton for the burial of Abba Kyari. If nobody can prosecute you, Covid-19 will.

Funke akindele was prosecuted not obeying social gathering, the northerners and politicians are gathering together and not practicing social distance because of Abba Kyari, Are they above the law?
— Engineer Tolu Tezzy_ 💧 (@tolutezzy_) April 18, 2020
The government officials violated d rules of Social Distancing all in d name of giving Abba Kyari a “proper burial”
Influencers that dragged Funke Akindele for same reason are silent.
NCDC that stripped her off the ambassador title is silent.
Alexa play me “Falz – Hypocrite”.

Funke Akindele deserves no apology, all we want is the government to use the same energy and prosecute those Northerners at the Burial of Abba Kyari who also failed to observe social distancing.
Nigerians, Is this too much to ask??
— Oryiman (@oyimzy) April 18, 2020
Everyone that attend Abba Kyari burial should also face the same punishment as Funke Akindele for not observing social distancing.
But the question here is who will arrest the Government? 💀

Tomorrow , Femi adesina will go to channels APC TV to tell us that the people at funke akindele's party were sweating, while those at Abba kyari funeral weren't sweating,

Funke akindele is trending cos politicians gathered at the burial of Abba kyari and are practicing zero social distance.
Think about it from this angle; if the virus spreads to all of them present there then that's a wipe out of some % of corrupt politicians!
Isn't that good?— yournextboyfriend💦 (@Alan_yournextbf) April 18, 2020
If we do not use the same energy that we used on Funke Akindele to change it for the government as regards to this burial, then we owe her an apology. And that means Burna Boy was right, so we also owe him an apology.
— AJ | Adonai Jacuzzi (@mrmanhere_) April 18, 2020
Funke akindele Got prosecuted for not observing social Distancing for a party not more than 50pple. But at Abba kyari's burial the whole north gathered there and it's not an offence cos its a burial.

Funke Akindele was arrested, lost her ambassadorship and sentence her to 14days community service for violating the lockdown order.
But just look at the crowd gathered at Abba Kyari's burial and they're even showing it on national television.
This country is an entire circus.

They prosecuted Aunty Funke Akindele for not practicing social distancing still they gathered themselves to Abba Kyari funeral.
Nigerians are being led by nothing but clowns 🤡🤡😂

I’d like to use this opportunity to clearly state that Funke Akindele was a scapegoat. She only got punished because she wasn’t a politician.
The people who gathered at Abbah Kyari’s funeral should all be quarantined & punished. Look at these ones holding hands!
What a country! pic.twitter.com/j3N7dR6Jm8

Funke Akindele was arrested & stripped of her ambassadorship for not practicing social distancing but in Abba Kyari's burial Kano, Kaduna and Aso Rock attended but police are quiet because politicians are involved.

It's not a surprise that our beautiful country is on a downward slope towards truth and justice, Funke Akindele was prosecuted for not practicing social distancing still they gathered themselves to Abba Kyari funeral in bundles.
