An angry mob has beaten a final year student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) to death for allegedly stealing a phone.

The yet-to-be-identified student was accused of stealing the phone from Awo Hall on Monday.

It was gathered that rather than reporting him to the institution’s authorities, a crowd pounced on the final student of the Department of Civil Engineering.

The student was later taken to the OAU Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife where he was confirmed dead.

The varsity confirmed the student’s death in a statement signed by Abiodun Olarewaju, its spokesperson.

The statement also confirmed that the victim died from a “mob action on the allegation.”

The institution condemned the circumstances that led to the death of the student and also vowed to ensure the people behind it are brought to book.

“Saddened by this ugly development which he described as unfortunate, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, has set up a committee to unravel the circumstances that led to this incident,” the statement reads.
“The action of the mob, being a violation of the law of the country and of the University regulations, has been reported to the police who have commenced investigations.
“The University administration hereby commiserates with the parents of the deceased, staff and students, and prays that God will grant us the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
The institution urged students to desist from taking laws into their hands and to report any criminal activities to the university authorities for immediate action.
