Kunle Afolayan, an award-winning Nollywood producer, has slammed a movie lover who criticised ‘Citation‘, his recently released film.

‘Citation’ had debuted on Netflix, a US streaming platform, on November 6, a few days after it premiered in Lagos. It was also ranked sixth among the top-10 most preferred movies on Netflix globally and number one in Nigeria.

However, on Thursday, a film lover took to Twitter to criticise the Nollywood movie. The user had claimed that the lack of subtitles for its French dialogue had become what he described as “a great disservice” to the sexual assault film.

“Citation is a great film, no doubt, but non-subtitle of French part is a great disservice to the movie,” the user wrote.

In reaction, Afolayan fired back, alleging that the critic had streamed his movie from unauthorised platforms and not Netflix.

Afolayan also hurled words like “stupid idiot” and “omo ale” (Yoruba word for bastard) with reference to the critic.

“You are a very stupid idiot. That’s what you get if you keep downloading films from unauthorized streaming platforms. Omo ale,” his tweet, which garnered over 3,300 retweets and 6,600 likes as of the time of this report, read.

‘Citation’ tells the story of a 21-year-old female student on a Nigerian campus who takes the case of a randy and famed university professor to the institution’s senate body on account of the latter’s desperate advances at her.

Subsequent events that unfold eventually pit her world against that of the respected academic, unraveling the stark realities that have frequently played out in many male-dominated educational environments.

Among the movie’s cast is Ibukun Awosika, the chairman of First Bank of Nigeria (FBN); Temi Otedola, Joke Silvia, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Ini Edo, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Adjetey Anang, Gabriel Afolayan, Bienvenu Neba, and Sadiq Daba.
