An average modern person has a short-attention-span which is small, some sources claim it’s shorter than that of a goldfish. You can take an easy guess to this problem. The internet and digital materials and tools available to us.
Our brains are constantly roaming from one information to another in a matter of seconds looking for the newest information, the latest skit to make us laugh, the latest music to vibe to, and so on.
With the availability of these digital tools on the increase, our level of focus is contrarily on the decrease. Despite this fact, we all have to live life achieving the many things which need to be done personally, in our family, career, financially, and so on.
We all need to put our minds to focus to get tasks done, achieve our goals, and meet deadlines.
So how can a person focus their mind to achieve all they have to?
With the help of some tools and the right mindset, here are some simple ways to boost your focus.
- Take Short Breaks
This advice might seem crazy however, it’s been proven to work well in improving focus. You may recall how stressed you’ve felt knowing that a big or tedious task such as; studying for an exam, lies ahead.
A lot of times, when we have prolonged or tedious tasks to accomplish, our minds tend to switch off or go on a break making it difficult to accomplish the task.
By taking short periodic breaks, you can remind your brain to relax and not stress over the task ahead. This can be achieved by switching your mind to an unrelated task or activity only for a few moments. Afterwards, switch back to the task at hand, and so forth.
- Set Small Daily Goals
When working towards achieving mental focus, the big idea is to start small.
Begin your day by setting small realistic goals to complement the larger, bigger goals you have to attend to.
For instance, if your goal is to get 50 new people to know about your online business, focusing on that alone can be depressing. What is more realistic and achievable, are the smaller tasks which lead up to the big goal such as; creating an Instagram page, taking pictures of your available products, running sponsored ads, etc.
Similarly, in everyday tasks, try to see the smaller elements which make up the big picture and focus on achieving those instead. By doing this, you’ll be on the right track to achieving your bigger goals.
- Toss Away Distractions
The biggest enemies of your mental focus are distractions. These distractions could be in various forms. Environment, people, social media, anxiety, worry, are common forms of distractions.
When it comes to boosting your focus, distraction cannot be part of the plan. Hence, it is important to get rid of every form of distraction. If it’s the numerous messages from social media, switch off your device, if it’s a person, kindly excuse yourself or ask that they give you privacy. If it’s anxiety or worry, try to relax first and focus all of your attention to the task at hand.
Going forward, place rules which help keep distractions away. If it’s telling your friends not to chat you up during certain hours or turning off notifications from certain social media applications, do what works best for you.
- Turn On The Music
This may not work for everyone, but if it does work for you, great! While it may seem unbelievable that music can help boost focus, it’s unbelievably so.
Certain experts recommend listening to music without lyrics to boost your focus while others, simply suggest that listening to your favourite song could help achieve this.
Whichever the case is, the best advice would be that which works best for you.
