Sex trafficking victim sues Facebook for ‘enabling’ her attacker

A woman who says she was raped, beaten and sex-trafficked by a pimp she met on Facebook has filed a lawsuit against the social network site.

The woman, identified as Jane Doe, claims that Facebook executives were aware that minors were being lured into the sex trade on their platform.

In the suit filed in Harris County district court, Houston, Texas, the woman also named Backpage.com and its founders as co-defendants.

According to the lawsuit, the woman was “friended” on Facebook in 2012 by a user who knew several of her real-life friends.

The lawsuit alleged that at one point following an argument with her mother, the trafficker offered to console her, but after picking her up from her home, he beat and raped her and took pictures that were posted on Backpage.com.

The lawsuit says Facebook did not do enough to verify the user’s identity, which the lawsuit said was false, and that Jane Doe was never warned that sex traffickers were operating on the platform.

Annie McAdams, the woman’s lawyer, said: “For over a decade Facebook has been providing predators unrestricted platform to prey on victims.

“Profiting from connecting people requires you to protect those with whom you connect.”
