There was panic around the Lekki toll gate area of Lagos on Tuesday evening after security operatives allegedly opened fire on peaceful protesters.
DJ Switch, a female disc jockey, took to her Instagram live to give an update of the situation at the toll gate — hours after Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the state governor, had ordered an indefinite 24-hour curfew, citing increased violence in the state.
In the Instagram live, which had more than 150,000 people watching, the disc jockey could be seen with other protesters trying to remove a bullet from the leg of a victim of the shootings while the toll gate lights remained off.
The footage also showed some demonstrators who were hit by bullets in various part of their bodies.
In another gory video, one of the protesters could be seen covered in blood while the Nigerian flag was used to reduce the bleeding from the wound.
While the casualty is yet to be known — as of the time of this report — some social media users claimed a number of protesters have been killed.
Amnesty International Nigeria also took to its Twitter page to express concern about the shootings in Lekki toll gate while calls for the DJ’s protection spread on the microblogging platform.
While we continue to investigate the killings, Amnesty International wishes to remind the authorities that under international law, security forces may only resort to the use of lethal force when strictly unavoidable to protect against imminent threat of death or serious injury.
