Although Beckham’s acting talent has come under heavy criticism, Ritchie says the former England captain is a “fabulous actor”.

“He was fantastic, I love old Becksy. He is a fabulous actor and a real pleasure to be with,” said Ritchie.

Speaking at the movie’s premiere in London, Beckham, who was tutored by a coach for his role, said acting is not a new career path for him.

“I haven’t taken a step into acting. It’s me doing something I love with a friend. It’s not a new career or something I want to go into,” he said.

“I’ve always liked a challenge and usually it’s to do with sport but with this I didn’t know if I was going to be OK. It was daunting but Charlie [Hunnam] was great and he gave me guidelines.

“Guy is scary as a boss but he’s a friend so you know he’s going to take care of you.”

The movie also stars Charlie Hunnam as the lead character, with Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey, Djimon Hounsou, and others in supporting roles.
